Eyeglasses Exam
Approximately 13% of the exam
Time limit: 55 minutes
In Part A, using the tolerance chart provided, candidates must indicate whether they would accept the eyeglasses or return them to the lab. Answers must be based strictly on the tolerance chart provided at the exam. If they would not accept the eyeglasses, they must indicate the one reason why the eyeglasses should be returned to the lab.
In Part B, based on the Rx, frame, and measurement information provided, candidates must answer multiple-choice questions about lens layout and lens blank size.
Approximately 38% of the exam
Time limit: 75 minutes
Candidates will be given five pairs of eyeglasses to neutralize. In addition to neutralizing the power, candidates will measure the other physical aspects they would normally record when neutralizing lenses, including but not limited to, distance and/or near PD, segment height/fitting cross height, and base curve.
Approximately 16% of the exam
Time limit: 20 minutes
In Part A, an examiner will act as a patient and the candidate will measure the examiner’s monocular distance and near PD. Candidates will be required to measure and record their answers first using only a penlight and ruler. Once they have recorded their answers for the penlight and ruler measurements, they will be required to measure and record their answers using a pupilometer.
In Part B, an examiner will act as a patient and the candidate will measure and record the examiner’s vertex distance in a provided metal frame.
In Part C, an examiner will act as a patient and the candidate will measure and record progressive and flat-top bifocal measurements for the examiner in a metal and nylon mount frame.
Approximately 18% of the exam
Time limit: 60 minutes
Candidates will be given four pairs of eyeglasses with their corresponding work orders. Using the tolerance chart provided, candidates must verify each pair to the work order and indicate on the answer sheet if each component of the eyeglasses is within or not within standard tolerance. Candidates must base their answers strictly on the standard tolerance chart provided.
Approximately 15% of the exam
Time limit: 30 minutes
In Part A, candidates will return one pair of eyeglasses with a metal frame and one pair of eyeglasses with a plastic frame to standard bench alignment.
In Part B, candidates will be given a pair of eyeglasses with a metal frame, and they must adjust the eyeglasses to fit an examiner acting as a patient. The patient cannot comment on the fit of the eyeglasses.
In Part C, candidates will insert a pair of lenses into a plastic frame.
Contact Lens Exam
Approximately 38% of the exam
Time limit: 80 minutes
In Part A, candidates will be given a pathology booklet. The booklet contains ten (10) photographs for Part A. They must identify the condition or anomaly in each photograph and record their findings.
In Part B, there are four (4) additional photographs in the pathology booklet. For each photograph, candidates must identify the condition or anomaly present and select the best course of action from the multiple-choice options provided.
In Part C, candidates must answer multiple-choice questions about fitting contact lenses.
In Part D, candidates will be presented with six case studies. For each case study, they must name the condition or cause of the patient’s problem based on the information provided in the case study and record their findings.
Approximately 7% of the exam
Time limit: 20 minutes
Candidates will be required to mount a calibration ball of unknown power and take the K-readings of the mounted ball. Candidates will then be asked to compare the k-reading they measured to a given k-reading and answer a multiple-choice question. Finally, candidates will be required to analyze a series of keratometry mire diagrams and answer a multiple-choice question about the diagrams.
Approximately 22% of the exam
Time limit: 45 minutes
In Part A, candidates will be presented with a case study and a series of questions and must record their answers.
In Part B, candidates will be provided with three (3) RGP lenses. Using the equipment provided, they must determine the back vertex power and diameter of each lens and record their findings.
Approximately 11% of the exam
Time limit: 20 minutes
In Part A, candidates will invert a patient’s eyelid and expose the tarsal plate.
In Part B, using the lens and solution provided, candidates will be required to demonstrate the cleaning of a soft lens.
